Shy Girl?

Create opportunities for your child to interact with other children. Children are born with a certain temperament. Your daughter may be the shy and timid type, as opposed to the sociable and extroverted child. Although research shows that a child’s temperament is relatively stable throughout childhood, there is also evidence that temperament becomes more flexible with experience.

To some extent, the fact that your daughter is only in your home can explain her inability to relate with peers. It is also possible that adults adjust to your daughter more than she or her peers are willing to do so in social exchanges. If you observe adults frequently giving in to her wishes and whims, this may not be a very good sign, and may actually indicate some problems in your child’s emotional understanding and social skills. You may need to seek some professional help for a psychologist, developmental pediatrician, or child psychiatrist. Any one of these professionals can do quick assessment and refer you to the appropriate services, as necessary.
